Glen Rock to host Hawthorne Friday in Homecoming

Oct 22, 2020 06:50PM ● By Julie Maxwell Allen

Friday’s game against neighboring Hawthorne at Alan Deaett Field at Glen Rock will be Homecoming for the Glen Rock High School football team. But as with almost everything else in this year of COVID-19, things will be quite different than what people are used to.

The first major difference will be that Homecoming 2020 will be on a Friday night, rather than a Saturday afternoon, as it always has been in the past. But there are many other differences, as well. Because of the pandemic, there will be no Homecoming Parade and no Homecoming Dance. And though there had originally been a pep rally and other in-school activities scheduled for Friday afternoon, those were canceled or postponed indefinitely after three high school students tested positive for the coronavirus last weekend.

In effect, Homecoming this year is now nothing more than a Senior Night, which will see all the seniors on the football team, cheerleading team, and band honored before the game. The seniors will all be introduced before the game, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff. The introductions are set to begin at 5:40 p.m.

The game itself will be a battle for first place in the Liberty Division of the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference. Hawthorne is 3-0, coming off a 7-6 victory over Pompton Lakes last Saturday. If Glen Rock (2-1) were to win, that would create a three-way tie for first in the division – presuming Pompton Lakes (2-1) beats 1-2 Saddle Brook on Saturday.

Attendance at the game will be restricted, because of state and local regulations brought about by the coronavirus. However, the game will be broadcast on Glen Rock TV (Channel 77 on Optimum and Channel 32 on FiOS) and live-streamed on YouTube, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PngfBBd9R8&feature=youtu.be

Here are the seniors who will be honored before the game:

Football: Ryan Burstiner; Tommy Callahan; Danny Crawford; Nico Hernandez-Torre; Edward Males; Angelo Piazza; Ty Louis Scherer; Jack Strawhorn; Noah Teicher; Mark Tuttle.

Cheerleading: Clare Brogan; Chloe Chupungco; Cameron Cioppio; Marly D’Amato; Nicole Finkenstadt; Raegan Johnson; Gianna Lucci; Kayla Moore; Kayla Stephenson; Kaira Torres; Megan Wolfe.

Band: Matt Ferrari; Charles Gaffney; Andrew Lee; Mallika Sinha; Jacob Stigum.
