Glen Rock Football's Ty Scherer named Athlete of the Week

Nov 05, 2020 02:37PM ● By Special to Glen Rock News Today

Glen Rock High School quarterback Ty Scherer was selected as the Male Athlete of the Week by The Record and northjersey.com on Thursday, following his outstanding performance in the Panthers’ 42-28 win last Friday over previously undefeated New Providence.

Scherer, a senior and captain, had been the Record’s Football Player of the Week last Thursday for his exploits -- both on offense and defense -- against Hawthorne Oct. 23. Against New Providence, Scherer led Glen Rock to victory when he ran for three touchdowns and passed for two. A safety on defense, Scherer led the defense with a team-high 12 tackles – six unassisted – and broke up two passes. According to The Record he passed for 102 yards and rushed for 185. Glen Rock News Today’s statistics had him with 99 passing yards and 177 rushing yards.

Scherer and Glen Rock will be back in action Friday at home against another undefeated team, Park Ridge. The opponent for the game was supposed to have been Saddle Brook, but the matchup was changed by the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC), which continued its schedule-shifting in the wake of all the schools canceling games due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Friday’s game will kick off at 6 p.m. at Alan Deaett Field and will be livestreamed by Glen Rock TV on YouTube at https://youtu.be/BPBrRilDs1A.

Glen Rock (4-1 overall, 3-1 in the NJIC’s Liberty Division) was originally supposed to have played Saddle Brook (1-3) in an away game Oct. 31, but Saddle Brook pulled out of that game early last week. That prompted Glen Rock to set up a replacement game against New Providence (4-1).

This weekend had been set aside by the NJIC for teams to play makeups of games lost to cancellations caused by COVID-19, and Glen Rock initially was slated to make up its game against Saddle Brook. However, since the game did not hold significance to the league standings, the NJIC chose to change the matchups. Park Ridge (4-0) was supposed to make up its game against St. Mary’s (0-3), but the league decided to create more competitive matchups by sending Park Ridge, the Patriot Division champion, to Glen Rock, and sending Saddle Brook to play against Wood Ridge (1-3).
